Robert Zajonc, an American social psychologist is known for his crucial contribution to the field of the social and cognitive process.

Key Points

According to Robert Zajonc:

  • Cognition and emotion are independent.
  • He justified his beliefs by stating that:
    • all emotion doesn't involve deliberate thinking.
    • some emotions skip the thinking part of the brain.
    • some emotions occur separately from our cognitive interpretation of them.
  • Emotions are global in nature in contrast to cognitions. So according to him emotion and cognition are categorically different.

Note: However the recent research deviates from Zajonc's beliefs because they suggest that cognition and emotion are highly independent.

Emotion

A mental state associated with fear, anger, love, etc.

Cognition

The process of acquiring knowledge through experiences and senses.

Interrelated

Things or people are highly related or connected.

Integrated

Things or people brought or unified together.

Interdependent

Things or people are extremely dependent on each other.

Hence, from the above-mentioned points, it becomes clear that Zajonc believes that cognition and emotion are independent.
