RRB ALP Success Story of Prem Shankar

1. What is your educational background?

I did my schooling in Baliya and later did Electronic and Communication Engineering at the Kanpur Institute of Technology (KIT).

2. What made you want to try for this exam? Did you take any other exams before this? What were your results?

I belong to Baliya, Uttar Pradesh, and I went to Kanpur to specially prepare for the SSC CGL exam. I joined coaching for the same, the 2018 CGL exam got delayed due to some reasons, and the RRB ALP notification came in January 2018. I thought to attempt this examination as the syllabus was almost similar to SSC CGL. I started preparing for the RRB ALP Prelims Paper, which was scheduled in August 2020, and with God’s grace, I cleared it. After this, I started preparing for the main exams, which were in January 2019. The results came in May 2019, and then I was called for a Psychological Test, which is a must for ALP Post. The last stage of the selection process was the medical test.

3. How did you plan/study for your exam? How many months ago did you start preparation?

the syllabus for RRB ALP was almost like SSC CGL except for the English subject, which was extra in the CGL syllabus. I started preparing as soon as the notification came. I specifically applied for the Ranchi Zone as the vacancies were more compared to other zones.

4. What was the strategy you adopted in preparing for the exam? What was your study schedule? What were the major hurdles you overcame?

I gave equal importance to all the subjects and invested the same time. I had a habit of starting my day early and used to start my day by 7 am.

I started my day by investing 1.5 to 2 hours in Current affairs. I used to watch the news and read the newspaper and make my notes. Then I used to take up the Maths section and also made sure to at least attempt one mock paper before taking a break. After taking a break of 1.5 hours, I take up the science and reasoning sections.

People around me gave me various suggestions, but I kept my focus clear. My family supported me in my decision, and the rest is history.

5. What strategies did you apply specifically for the different sections?

Instead of focusing on various topics, I made sure to revise the already-learned topics again and again till I got them right. Also, I practised the previous year’s papers to know the types of questions and their difficulty level. I applied this strategy to all the sections.

6. Most of the students prefer to go to Coaching Centers rather than prepare on their own. Which one do you prefer and why?

Every student is different, and so is their way of preparation. I prepared on my own as I was clear with how I wanted to prepare, and I had the optimum resources for the same.

7. How important was Testbook in your success, and how did it help you improve?

Testbook’s speed tests helped me analyse my preparation level. The best thing about these tests was the explanation given for the wrong answers. It helped me analyse where I went wrong.

8. What resources did you use to study (both books and online)?

I used both books and online resources for RRB ALP exam preparations.

9. How many tests did you take overall?

I have attempted SSC CGL and UP PCS. Apart from this, I have filled out the application forms for various other competitive exams, which I am yet to attempt.

10. Comment on the difficulty level of your exam paper. How did you tackle it? What were the challenges faced during the actual exam?

I attempted 71 questions in the prelims exam and got around 56 questions correct. In the RRB ALP Mains Examination, the questions from maths were from 8 to 10th standard level, so the difficulty level was moderate. In the science section, Biology and Chemistry were of moderate level, but physics was at the 12th standard level. So, make sure to prepare the science section up upto 12th standard.

11. Words of advice for future aspirants.

I believe that practice is the key to success. Once you start practising more and more questions, you will start understanding the questions well, as comprehending the questions correctly is crucial to reach the correct answer. Keep on practising and stay focussed on your goal.

All the best to all the aspirants!!
