Topographical Maps (Toposheets):

  • A Topographical Map is a type of map characterized by large-scale detail and quantitative representation of terrain usually using contour lines.
  • In other words, Topographical Map is plotted on a sufficiently large scale to enable the individual features shown on the map to be identified on the ground by their shapes and positions.
  • In India, the Survey of India is responsible for all topographic control, surveys and mapping.
  • Before adopting National Mapping Policy: 2005, Survey of India had published and printed topographical maps on 1:250,000; 1:50,000 and 1:25,000 scales.
  • But since adoption of National Mapping Policy: 2005, Survey of India has stopped the production of fresh topographical maps.
