Concept:

When the ultrasonic waves are sent through a specimen, they travel throughout and then reflect back and will travel the complete depth again.

The time difference between the pulse sent and the pulse received is known as echo time.

It is related to the velocity of waves and thickness of specimen as follows,

\(t = \frac{{2l}}{v}\)

Where t – echo time, l – thickness of the specimen, v – velocity of ultrasonic waves

Calculation:

Given l = 20 mm = 0.02 m; v = 18000 kmph = 18000 × 5/18 m/s

⇒ v = 5000 m/s;

Now the echo time will be

\(t = \frac{{2\; \times\; 0.02}}{{5000}} = 8 \times {10^{ - 6}}\;s\)
