Syllabus: GS Paper 3
In News:
- A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar causing widespread destruction. A 6.7-magnitude aftershock followed, worsening the devastation.
- Mandalay, Myanmar ’ s second-largest city, suffered severe infrastructure damage, with collapsed buildings, bridges, and roads.
- The earthquake also impacted Thailand, where Bangkok witnessed building collapses and casualties. India launched "Operation Brahma " to provide humanitarian assistance to Myanmar.
Details of the Earthquake:
Myanmar:
- Epicenter: Near Sagaing, central Myanmar.
- Casualties: 1,644+ dead, 3,400+ injured, 139 missing.

Thailand:

Why is Myanmar facing frequent Earthquakes?
- The Sagaing Fault runs north to south through central Myanmar and is one of the most active fault lines in the region.
- It marks the tectonic plate boundary between: Indian Plate (west) Eurasian Plate (east)
- The Indian Plate is moving northward, rubbing against the Eurasian Plate, leading to strike-slip faulting (sideways movement of plates), which frequently causes earthquakes.
- The 7.7-magnitude earthquake in Myanmar occurred due to strike-slip faulting along the Sagaing Fault. It was a shallow earthquake.
