Consanguineal Kinship

This type of kinship is based on blood relations. It includes relationships between parents and children, siblings, and other direct blood relatives. Consanguineal kinship is considered the most basic and universal form of kinship.

Affinal Kinship

Affinal kinship is based on marriage. It includes relationships between spouses, such as husband and wife. Marriage creates kinship ties between individuals and their in-laws.

Degree of Kinship

The degree of kinship can be divided into three main categories. They are:

Primary Kinship

The closest circle includes parents, siblings, and children. These are your direct blood relatives or those you're directly related to through marriage (spouse).

  • Primary Consanguineal Kinship
      • Direct relationships by birth, like parents, siblings, and children.
      • Universal in societies worldwide.
  • Primary Affinal Kinship
    • Direct relationships formed through marriage, mainly between husband and wife.

Secondary Kinship

One step further, encompassing the primary relatives of your primary kin. Think grandparents, aunts/uncles, nieces/nephews, and in-laws like parents-in-law and siblings-in-law.

  • Secondary Consanguineal Kinship
      • Relatives of primary consanguineal kin, like grandparents and grandchildren.
      • Grandparents become secondary consanguineal kin.
  • Secondary Affinal Kinship
    • Relatives of one's primary affinal kin, such as sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
    • For an individual, the spouse's parents and siblings become secondary affinal kin.

Tertiary Kinship

Even further out, involving the primary relatives of your secondary kin. This includes great-grandparents, great-aunts/uncles, and spouses of siblings-in-law.

  • Tertiary Consanguineal Kinship
      • Involves great-grandparents, great-grand aunts/uncles, and great-grand nieces/nephews.
      • Shows relationships like great-grandparents being tertiary kin to great-grandchildren.
  • Tertiary Affinal Kinship
    • Involves complex relationships like a spouse's grandparents or brother/sister-in-law's spouses and children.
    • Demonstrates connections between primary affinal kin's primary kin and secondary affinal kin's primary kin.
