Permeability

In electromagnetism, permeability is the measure of magnetization that a material obtains in response to an applied magnetic field.

For measuring relative permeability, a vacuum is chosen as the reference medium.

Relative permeability is defined as the ratio of material permeability to the absolute permeability of free space (or vacuum).

\(\mu_r={\mu\over \mu_o}\)

\(\mu_r \space \alpha\space {1\over \mu_o}\)

Hence, Relative permeability is inversely proportional to absolute permeability in free space.

where, μ = Material permeability

μo = Absolut permeability of free space

μr = Relative permeability

The value of permeability of vacuum is 4π × 10-7 H/m.
