The correct answer is Bone marrow.Key Points

Lymphocytes are primarily produced in the bone marrow, which is the spongy tissue inside some of your bones. These cells are an essential part of the immune system. After the initial formation, immature lymphocytes may travel to the thymus to mature into T lymphocytes, or stay in the bone marrow to become B lymphocytes.

The bone marrow is a primary lymphoid organ and a key player in the immune system as it is where the production and maturation of lymphocytes initiate.

There are two main types of lymphocytes: B lymphocytes (B cells) and T lymphocytes (T cells), each having different roles in the immune response:

  • B lymphocytes (B cells) start and mature within the bone marrow. When these cells encounter a foreign substance (antigen), such as bacteria or a virus, they become activated and produce proteins called antibodies. Each B cell is programmed to make one specific antibody. These antibodies are designed to lock onto the surface of specific antigens to neutralize them and mark them for destruction by other immune cells.
  •  T lymphocytes (T cells) are formed in the bone marrow but migrate to the thymus (an organ located in the chest), to mature, hence the name T cells. T cells do not produce antibodies. Instead, they have different ways of recognizing antigens. Some T cells directly destroy the cells that carry certain antigens, while others help control the immune response.

Additional Information

  • Liver:
    • The liver receives all the blood that exits the intestines and stomach.
    • This blood is processed by the liver, which also breaks down, balances, and produces nutrients.
    • It also metabolizes medications to make them more easily absorbed by the body or nontoxic.
  • Long bone:
    • Long bones are tough, dense bones that offer stability, movement, and strength.
  • Pancreas:
    • To digest food, the pancreas produces pancreatic enzymes, which are natural fluids.
    • Ducts carry these liquids via the pancreas.
    • They discharge into the duodenum, which is the top portion of the small intestine.
