What is the Eligibility Required to Take the SAT?

There are no specific criteria for the SAT Eligibility set by the College Board, which administers the test. You should be a high school student planning to apply to undergraduate programs, including those abroad, where SAT scores are part of the admissions process. Students under 13 cannot independently register for the SAT, but a parent or guardian can complete the registration. There is no age limit, but taking the SAT during junior or senior year or shortly after graduation is usually best. There are no eligibility limitations for the 2025 SAT registration, so any student aiming to apply to colleges requiring SAT scores is welcome to register and take the exam.

How to Register for the SAT?

Registration for the Digital SAT can be done online through the official College Board website. Students who want to apply for the SAT must sign up by visiting the official website of the College Board for the SAT. To register for the SAT exam, follow the steps below.

Step 1: Create a College Board Account

You may start your SAT registration process by going to the College Board and signing up for a new account in the new registration area. You will find all of your SAT Test registrations and scores right here. Fill in the information regarding yourself accurately. Remember that the same name should appear on your photo ID.

Step 2: Choose Your Test Date & Center

After having logged in, select your SAT date and test center. There are fluctuations in availability; thus, early registration is recommended to secure your location and date of preference. The SAT portal will have the details related to the list of available centers based on your location.

Step 3: Fill Out Your High School Information

Please find out who the tenth-grade students are and check if your school has been featured among them. Choose the correct pruning based on the data you have.

Step 4: Upload a Photo

You'll need to upload a recent, recognizable photo of yourself as part of your registration. This photo will appear on your Admission Ticket and must look like you on the day of the test for identification.

Keep in mind:

  • A message that says your upload is successful and your photo is of the correct type and size. It doesn't mean that your photo otherwise meets the requirements.
  • Photos should be in one of the following formats: .jpg, .gif, or .png. You will have an opportunity to crop and reposition your photo after uploading.

  • You're easy to recognize.
  • You're the only one in the picture. It's a head and shoulders view, with the entire face, eyes, and hair visible. 
  • Head coverings worn for religious purposes are okay.
  • You're focus.
  • There are no dark spots or shadows.
  • Black and white photos are acceptable
  • One or both of your eyes aren't visible or are blocked (for example, you're wearing sunglasses).
  • The photo includes more than one person.
  • Poor image quality that makes you unrecognizable. Excessive lighting or shadows make you unrecognizable.
  • You're wearing a hat or head covering that isn't for religious purposes.
  • Your photo has been digitally altered to change your appearance (including filters) or tampered with in any way.

Step 5: Link to the College Board's Student Search Service

You also have an option to opt into the College Board's Student Search Service, which connects you with colleges and scholarship programs searching for students just like you. Step 6: Registration Fee

Complete your registration by paying the test fee for the SAT. The SAT portal supports a variety of payment methods, including credit cards, PayPal, and others. Fee-waiver options exist for students who qualify under a set of eligibility criteria.

Step 7: Print Your Admission Ticket

Once you have registered, print your Admission Ticket. Keep it for the test day, along with appropriate photo identification. You will not be able to take the digital SAT without it.

Eligibility for SAT Fee Waivers

  • You're enrolled in the Federal National School Lunch Program; you qualify for a fee waiver.
  • Your family's annual income falls within the Income Eligibility Guidelines that the USDA Food and Nutrition Service sets.
  • You're enrolled in a federal, state, or local program that supports students from low-income families, such as TRIO programs like Upward Bound.\
  • Your family receives public assistance, such as food stamps or welfare benefits.\
