Blast At Stone Quarry In Tamil Nadu’s Kariapatti, Numerous Casualties Feared

In the aftermath of the incident, local residents are calling for the permanent closure of the stone quarry

An explosion at a stone quarry in the Kariapatti area of Virudhunagar district in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday has reportedly resulted in multiple fatalities. The CCTV footage captured the intense blast.

Initial investigations suggest that the explosion originated from a storage facility suspected to have housed explosive materials. Rescue teams are methodically clearing debris and conducting thorough searches to ensure the safety of the area, including the identification and disposal of any unexploded materials.

The quarry was situated near the Aviyur-Keezhauppili Kundu road. The explosives were stored at the site for breaking rocks, resulting in the complete destruction of two vehicles. The impact of the blast was felt up to a distance of 20 kilometers due to its intensity

Local residents have voiced longstanding grievances about the quarry, citing concerns about safety hazards and numerous accidents involving overloaded trucks. Prior to the explosion, the quarry had reportedly been temporarily closed.

Following the incident, local residents are calling for the permanent closure of the stone quarry.
