A new BBC documentary has unveiled the lesser known details of the connection between late Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala and gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, shedding light on what led to the tragic killing of the Singer.
In the second episode of the series, gangster Goldy Brar, who claimed responsibility for Moosewala’s murder, shared audio messages detailing the dispute between Sidhu and Bishnoi. According to Brar, the two were initially on friendly terms, “Lawrence was in touch with Sidhu. don’t know who introduced them, and I never asked, but they did speak. Sidhu used to send ‘Good morning’ and ‘Good night’ messages in an effort to flatter Lawrence,” he revealed.
A friend, who refused to be identified, said, “Sidhu said Lawrence Bishnoi called me. Lawrence called him from jail. He said Lawrence really liked his music and said Sidhu was doing really well.” The communication between the two started in 2017-2018, and continued until after Sidhu moved back to India.
It is said that Sidhu Moosewala was close to Lawrence Bishnoi, however, things started to heat up when he started to relate with the enemies of Bishnoi gang, the Bambiha gang. It reached the tipping point when Sidhu performed at a kabaddi tournament allegedly organized by the Bambiha group, intensifying the rift between him and Bishnoi’s camp.

It reached the tipping point when one of the close aides and mentors of Lawrence Bishnoi and Goldy Brar, Vicky Middukhera, was murdered. Although Sidhu claimed he had nothing to do with the death of Vicky, his growing closeness to rival Bambiha gang made him became a suspect in Lawrence’s eyes.
Goldy stated, “Everyone knew Sidhu’s role (in Vicky’s death), the police knew, even the journalists knew. He was using his political power, his money, his resources to help our rivals, those who killed our brother. We wanted him to face punishment for what he’d done. He should have been booked. He should have been jailed but no one heard our plea. So we took it upon ourselves. When decency falls on deaf ears, it’s the gunshot that gets heard.”
He added, “We had no option but to kill him. He had to face the consequences of his actions. It was either him or us. As simple as that.”
On May 29, 2022, Sidhu Moosewala was shot dead in his car in Jawaharke village, Mansa district, Punjab. He was driving his black Mahindra Thar when two vehicles blocked his way, and he was shot at multiple times. According to the post-mortem report, 24 bullets hit him. His cousin and friend, who were in the car with him, managed to survive. Shortly after the murder, Goldy Brar took responsibility via a Facebook post.
